Description:

Allen Campbells' lecture focuses on the use of draught horses, during the 1930's to 1950's, as part of the logging industry in Northern Ontario.

Speaker Bio:

Allan Lorne Campbell has had a long and versatile career that has taken him back-and-forth from Northwestern Ontario to Toronto many times. Allan grew up in Geraldton. At the young age of 15 he began working alongside his father in the logging camps. After graduating from high school, Allan continued working in the logging industry as a pieceworker skidding logs with draught horses. Later he decided to move to Toronto to attend the Provincial Institute of Trades and Occupations School to become a machinist. After graduating Allan worked several years in sales for an industrial engineering and equipment co. in Toronto. It was here he met his wife. Eventually the call of the north sent Allan and family back to Northwestern Ontario. This lumber jack returned to the logging industry and back to piece work skidding trees with a large mechanical skidder. After a period, Allan knew he had to further his education. Allan returned to Toronto with his family and enrolled at the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute to become a Public Health Inspector. After graduation in 1971 he returned to Thunder Bay to commence work with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. Allan continued to take courses through Ryerson and was promoted from inspector to senior inspector, and then Chief Public Health Inspector. He later finished his career as Director of Communicable Disease, Environment and Enforcement. Campbell retired in 2002. Retirement hasn’t slowed the former logger down. He presently is the president of the Fort William Branch #6 Housing Corporation. He has served on executive committees for Royal Canadian Legion Branches, a volunteer on the outreach and visitation program for the Royal Canadian Legion and Veteran Affairs Canada. He also visits schools where he explains what logging was about in the early days.
