Description:

This presentation covers the story of 3000+ troops travelling over the incomplete and rugged Lake Superior section of the C.P.R. All this in 18 days, during early spring of April 1885. Chronological & geographically laid out and based on a book published by the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society.

It will be told using vintage images relating how companies of troops from the east moved between the end of the C.P.R. track at Missenabie (50 miles north of Wawa) to Red Rock. Four gaps totaling 98 miles had to be endured, including 3 ice road trails across Lake Superior bays and along shorelines. The urgent objective was to keep travel time to 7 days from Ottawa - Winnipeg.

Modern research has given the opportunity to combine these rare images with other primary documents including selected C.P.R. Telegrams and Regimental Memoirs &Testimonies to unpack this untold regional history story of Northwestern Ontario in 1885.
