This will be an in-person ticketed event.
Description:
Join us on December 4 at 7:00 PM for a special screening of Under the Red Star (2011). By local filmmakers Shebafilms Studios, this film explores the story of Finnish immigration to Canada. Set against the backdrop of the historic Finnish Labour Temple—the largest monument to Finnish immigration in North America—the film captures how this landmark evolved from a hub for politics, sports, and entertainment into the birthplace of social democracy in Canada. This screening coincides with The Thunder Bay Museum’s new exhibit on the Finnish Labour Temple, offering audiences an even deeper look into this vital chapter of local and national history.
Stick around after the screening for a talk with Kelly Saxberg, the writer, director, and editor of Under the Red Star. Kelly Saxberg is a multilingual, award-winning filmmaker and educator, best known for her body of work that features Ontario history and the remarkable women who have shaped it. With a career spanning 40 years, she has produced more than 100 films. Kelly has also mentored and employed dozens of emerging filmmakers and artists in Thunder Bay through Flash Frame workshops and film projects since 2001. She is the president of Friends of The Finnish Labour Temple, a registered charity.
Under the Red Star is not rated by the MPAA.
