Description:

I'm pleased to be planning a presentation on the Centenary of the United Church of Canada, which occurred last June. (We will be commemorating it at St. Paul's United Church in October ourselves!) My intention is to talk about the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches locally that came together in 1925--or chose not to go into Union. As one example, the majority of the members of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church went into Union, while the minority founded Lakeview Presbyterian Church. On the other hand, the majority of the members of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church maintained that connection, while their minister and the minority of members walked down the street in June 1925 to join Wesley Methodist/United Church in Fort William. It's an interesting history! (And I've been a member of St. Paul's United Church since 1978!)
SPEAKER BIO:
Dr. Ernie Epp is a Professor Emeritus of History at Lakehead University. His doctorate was awarded in 1973 by The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and he came to Lakehead University in 1978 to teach Canadian History. He continued to teach Environmental History for ten years after his retirement in 2007. The most important part of his community service was as Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay-Nipigon--as it was at that time--from 1984 to 1988. He takes pride in launching the campaign in 1988 to twin the Trans-Canada Highway, which is nearing completion between Thunder Bay and Nipigon!
